A Day In The Life…
Since beginning my journey as a funeral celebrant in Jersey, I can confidently say that no two days are ever the same. Each day is varied, challenging, creatively rewarding, and meaningful.
I start my mornings by checking emails, messages, and voicemails from funeral directors and the families I’m working with. There might be updates to the Order of Service, additions to eulogies or tributes, or changes to the service script due to family members or friends now able—or no longer able—to attend. Often, travel disruptions to the island due to weather play a role in these changes. I may also receive new enquiries from families who have recently lost a loved one and have decided they would like to appoint a celebrant.
Once I’ve caught up on the admin bits and updated my spreadsheets accordingly, my day might involve visiting a family, conducting a service, or attending the burial of ashes. Or it could be a desk-based day, writing up notes from meetings or crafting eulogies from scratch.
Whatever the day holds, I find huge fulfillment in every aspect of this work. Of course, the emotional nature of my role presents challenges, but my focus is always on supporting the families I work with—helping them say their goodbyes and grieve in the way they need to. By guiding them in creating a service that really reflects their loved one’s life and character, I hope to provide some comfort and closure during such a difficult time.
Every family is unique.
Every relationship between my point of contact and the deceased is unique.
The emotions people are navigating are unique.
And all of this must be approached with care and sensitivity on an individual basis.
All in all, being a funeral celebrant in Jersey is incredibly rewarding, and I feel deeply fortunate to assist people at such a significant moment in their lives.
